Vehicle & Personnel Barrier Systems

A crash rating printed on a spec sheet describes a product, not an installation. GSS selects, integrates, and — where it matters most — validates barrier performance against what the protective strategy actually requires.

OPERATIONAL CONTEXT

A crash rating on a spec sheet is a starting point, not a delay guarantee

Vehicle barriers — bollards, wedge barriers, gates — and personnel delay structures are selected for standoff and crash rating appropriate to the vehicle and explosive threat defined in the Design Basis Threat. That selection is where most barrier programs stop.

It shouldn't be. A manufacturer's rating describes the product tested in controlled conditions; the delay it actually provides depends on foundation, terrain, and installation, and on whether it's integrated with the detection and response elements around it. GSS reviews barrier selection against as-installed conditions and, where the barrier is protecting a target set worth the certainty, validates performance directly rather than relying on the rating alone — see Explosive Validation & Blast-Resistant Design.

A barrier without coordinated detection simply delays an adversary a response force never sees coming. Placement, detection coverage, and response positioning are specified together, not procured as separate line items.
